Why Metal-to-Metal Brass Seating Beats Resilient Seats in Heavy Industrial Environments

While resilient seated gate valves (using EPDM or NBR rubber encapsulation) provide bubble-tight closure in low-temperature pipelines, they are prone to mechanical degradation under constant shear forces, abrasive media, and thermal fluctuations. Brass-seated gate valves utilize a metal-to-metal (brass-to-bronze or brass-to-iron) mechanical interface. This provides superior resistance to micro-abrasions, high frictional stress, and temperatures up to 180°C.

The metallurgical alignment of brass (typically CZ122 or lead-free silicon brass variants) offers high structural ductility. This mechanical compliance allows the wedge and the body seats to form a high-precision metal seal, minimizing internal leakage to meet class standard API 598 shell and seat standards.

Mitigating Galvanic Corrosion and Mineral Cavitation

A primary challenge in global water distribution is galvanic corrosion, which occurs when dissimilar metals contact electrolyte solutions. KR’s custom brass seat rings are manufactured with specific zinc-equivalent concentrations and undergo thermal treatment to prevent dezincification (DZR). Furthermore, our ductile iron bodies undergo Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) coating (minimum thickness of 250 microns), isolating the structural iron from the fluid path and mitigating localized cavitation.
